Learning in the Loop

Teaching Philosophy

I design my courses around the belief that learning is an active, social, and iterative process. Students learn best when they are regularly asked to think, explain, test ideas, and revise their understanding, not simply absorb information. Everything I do in the on-ground or virtual classroom is based on the learning feedback loop: do something→ receive feedback→ reflect → revise → do it again – the deepest learning happens in reflection and revision. Failure is a key part of the learning process and when students don’t learn to fail, they fail to learn. For those reasons, I rely heavily on active learning strategies – low-stakes quizzes, structured writing, discussion, and collaborative problem-solving – to help students connect prior knowledge to new concepts and to make their thinking visible. Whether I am teaching a quantitative or qualitative course, I expect students to engage consistently with the material and with one another, developing intellectual confidence through practice rather than performance.

Assessment in my courses is intentionally authentic and aligned with how knowledge is used beyond the classroom. I emphasize interpretation, reasoning, and the ability to explain why an answer makes sense, not just whether it is correct. Grades are treated as feedback on learning rather than the goal of learning, and I encourage students to focus on mastery, reflection, and growth instead of point accumulation. At the same time, I hold high expectations and provide high support to each student, including clarity, care, and structure. My classrooms are designed to be rigorous and supportive spaces where students are comfortable taking intellectual risks, learning from mistakes, and developing the habits of mind they will need long after the course ends.
